Emma

Is our only non-draft horse. Born in 1999, Emma is a brown and white registered paint.

We rescued Emma from an auction in Canada, just a few hours before being killed.

We do not know her past but is very obvious that she suffered, and was abused. When we got her she had a lot of scratches all over her body, especially on her face. She was very afraid of us and refuse do be touched or petted.

With time however, all her scratches have healed, and her hair grew back. She became a beautiful Paint.

Emma is not as friendly as the drafts. Although she likes to be petted, she only enjoys it for short period of times. Knowing that she needed time to regain her trust in humans, we never forced petting her, and let her come to us first. She also shies away from strangers and seems to be more comfortable examining them from a distance.

We do however recognize that Emma's trust in us grow each day. It is very obvious that she does seek our companionship and love, and follows us around the ranch. Lately, in the evenings, when we come to say good night to her, she even lets us kiss her and give her a good rub down. Unfortunately however, she still refuses to willingly be treated by the vet and Ferrier, (we are working hard on it), and still needs to be sedated when they come to treat her.

In the herd, Emma is still a bit of an outsider, but seems to be o.k. with it as long as she is still part of the group.

She loves to run, and being different than the drafts, (not as lazy); she does enjoy exercising around the arena, and sprints as fast as she can in the open field. She also loves showers and enjoys rolling around in the mud immediately thereafter. Somehow however we are amazed to see how clean she gets by herself just a few hours later. It is still a mystery to us how this happens?!

We know for certain that our beloved Emma will get better. We will give her all the time she needs until she realizes that not all humans seek her harm. We know that the only thing she needs is time and patience and that eventually she will regain her trust in humans.

We will keep reassuring her every day that her suffering days are over and that this is indeed her final home.

We love Emma dearly and will always give her lots of love and comfort.
