What Do We Do? We rescue abused and neglected horses, and provide them with a permanent home with us. Our horses are a part of our family and are here to stay. They have the same place in our home as if there were human kids of ours. First we thought about the idea of fostering the horses and then finding them homes, however, the idea of getting attached to them and then letting them go, even to good families, is just unacceptable and not do-able by us. The love we have for those animals is simply too great. Prior to getting the horses to the property, we knew the importance of understanding what those animals are all about, so we can meet all their needs in order to keep them healthy and happy. So we educated ourselves with as much knowledge as possible. We learned that those big animals must have the space and the freedom to run. They can not stay confined in a small space without the option to exercise as in the wild horses nature is to graze all day and move around constantly. Horses are herd animals and therefore must belong to one. In order for them to be healthy and happy they cannot be away from other horses all by themselves. In the herd, they keep each other company, in order to feel secure and happy, so therefore, we really try to provide them a kind of life they will have as if they were back in the wild. We raise them in a natural way, Meaning we allow them to roam free around the ranch, be with each other and just enjoy being horses. After all, we thought, they had suffered enough. We now see that by doing so our horses are so very well adjusted, loving, and gentle toward each other and toward humans as well. They are playful and feel secured in their home. They love to interact with us and always welcome us and are ready to play or just get some love and attention. We feel great pleasure seeing our beautiful horses playing and loving each other and just feeling free and safe. We realize however that they do need exercise, and although is hard to motivate draft horses to move, we try to find some time to exercise them on the weekends by taking them into the arena to run, or try to motivate them to run around the property, which is quite an amazing sight. |
